After the Ascension of Jesus, Santiago, or St. James the Greater, began to evangelize ancient Spain. He returned to Jerusalem and died as a martyr in the year 42. St. James the Greater was the first Apostle to shed his blood and die for Jesus. His companions moved his body to Galicia, where they arrived through the port of Iria Flavia (now Padrón). They placed the body of St. James on a rock, which became the Holy Sarcophagus. The origin of devotion to Santiago is unknown, but it seems that in the year 814 his relics were miraculously rediscovered. From the fifteenth century onwards, the church in Santiago de Compostela became one of the main pilgrimage sites of Christianity and gave rise to the current Camino del Santiago, or Way of Saint James. In 1884, Pope Leo XIII officially recognized the bones of the St. James. Santiago de Compostela is a major destination of pilgrimage today. People from all over the world make the Camino, whose final destination is the tomb of St. James the Greater.
